Child Hunger in Florida

By Melissa Quamina -12yrs old- Kissimmee, Fl

Dear Governor Ron DeSantis, Child hunger is a worldwide problem, which affects many Floridian families.  Florida is the only state that doesn’t use the Federal Child Food Aid Program. In an article called “Florida Politics”, many of the neediest families in our state are missing out on about 820 million dollars in child food assistance. In a tweet by Senator Marco Rubio, he says it is unacceptable that we are the only state who has not signed the federal funding. Playing with the lives of hungry children is simply cruel.

I don’t think that people know how much child hunger can affect the population. 3.1 million children are dying under the age of 5, which is 45 percent of all deaths for that age group. This underscores the urgent need to accelerate the fight against this condition. I believe that we can help solve this problem by giving hungry families $800 – $1000 monthly to deal with hunger. This could potentially lower the percentage by at least 25 percent.

In 1 Timothy 6: 18, the Bible says, “that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate.” Also in Mathew 7:7 it says to “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you:” It is sad to know that in these difficult times where prices are going up, people can’t buy groceries because they can’t afford it. As the governor, Mr. DeSantis, you must help Floridians by fighting against child hunger.
